<media:text>a very important story, exclusive and to the -- investigation long removes learn long before deadly contaminated including its -- ingredients were found in heparin other cases but some of multiple warnings but no actions. documents show fda staffers repeatedly sounded the ala over the safety of drug imports starting way back in 1988. that is when a generic epilepsy drug was recalled after two deaths. yet former fda employees told the bloomberg the agency did nothing to improve safety even as the volume of imports soared. >> the fda has been in a daring work spiral for several years now. with the downward spiral. safety being the major of this is. >> to cut costs companies have turned to a grievance from china and other countries with lower labor costs. 80 percent of the ingredients come from abroad. >> we have had a dramatic shift in where the ingredients, from, and now they're coming primarily from overseas. and that means the fda ability to inspect all of these facilities has been greatly diminished because they just cannot possibly. >> back in 1996 a memo from fda forensic chemistry center worry about imported drugs. <media:text>whether or not imclone systems drug works, it does not help patients with a gene mutation found in 40% of colorectal tumors. adding this drove to chemo therapy cut the risk by 1/3. it may help doctors decide the best treatment. i almost wonder the 2000 people in the u.s. will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year. joing us for more on this is is john johnson, ceo of imclone. he joins us from chicago. you in building your highly awaited results on the trial. it does not seem like the sam slam dunk. 40% of colon cancer patients may be lost because this drug does not work on them. are you disappointed by the results? > not at all. i think this weekend was great news for a cancer patients. as dr. lynch pointed out yesterday, there have been over 14 studies of 12,000 patients with a lot of other drugs where no survival benefit was shown. only two drugs have shown a survival benefit when added to chemotherapy. what is important to keep in mind about this data and why so many people were excited, is that with this drug trial, we have a broad spectrum of patients. we have patients that were sick or who had performance data two. today, in the united states, only 18% of lung cancer patients get this biological therapy. that is a terrific market for us. it is good for those patients. >> your stock is now down 6% in the pre-market. well you say it is great, your shareholders are saying, no, it is not. >> any time we have an event like this, there's a lot of volatility going on. for us, the good news and the good news for cancer patients is that they now have another option. they felt very great about it. >> how much in terms of revenue will this ad on? >> we do not provide specific guidance in that area. this is the largest cancel market, the lung cancer market. lung cancer is the number-one killer in terms of all the cancer related deaths. for us, it is a large market and we look forward. to going into. >> some analysts are saying it could add up to $700 million in revenue. is that? ? >> like a said, we do not provide specific guidance, but clearly, this is a large opportunity for us. will we have said publicly is that we expect this to be a major growth driver for us. > you are not giving numbers. your company has been talked about as a possible takeover. targets -- possible takeover targets. >> we do not comment on matters related to that. what i have been drawn in to do at imclone was to grow the company. specifically, grow the cancer drug sales along with merck around the world. we're working on a pipeline. we just announced our target will go into phase 1 clinical trials. >> explain what that is. >> is a product that will be in this class of products. it will go first into breast cancer patients. patients will begin enrolling in that study this summer. it is a phase three trial that we have reached a protocol agreement with the fda. >> you were just talking about your pipeline. obviously, some of the criticism on your company is uri one trick pony right now. what, out of all of those, the thing will be your next blockbuster drug? > we love all of the children in our pipelines. the three that are closest are 1121, r2, 11fa. and a 12. it's a nice, exciting target right now. we have about 20 face two troth well be on without product by the end of the year. > those are all cancer related? >> yes. >> how much will you be boosting your research and development spending? >> this year we have given guidance that will increase that by about 20-30%. we're not giving guidance of next year, we're clearly making significant investments in. the. >> where do you see growth for your company overseas? > gross and the u.s. will continue to come from the colon market. we're hoping for fda approval. tremendous on that need. </media:text>

<media:text>there might be some big news for patients with multiple sclerosis, about 2 million people across the world suffer from it. they might have some new options. suzanne o'halloran has details. >> acordas shares jumping over 20%. they said that their fampridine drug was very effective in late stage trials. they are said to head to the fda for approval in the first quarter of 2009. i am now joined by the ceo, congratulations. it is very positive. the biggest questions coming from the wall street community is will this help the business forecast? >> they are down over 400,000 people in the u.s. who live with multiple sclerosis. we are still doing our market research in terms of pricing and how many of those patients might benefit and take the drug. we don't have a specific market figure now but we can tell you those of the numbers of people that might be potentially affected. >> i was wondering when you talk about this, how long will it be until patients can take this? >> what we have done is that we have had two late-stage or phase-three clinical trials both of which showed that the drug had the ability to improve walking ability and that is one of the key issues, they'd lose the ability to walk over time. now that we have those trials we need to file a new drug application with the fda and we plan to do that in the first quarter of 2009. it depends on how long it takes for the fda to approve it and hoping that they will review it favorably and allow us to market it. >> it is given in 95% chance of approval, yowhy not sell yourself to a large drug maker? >> there is no sure thing in drug development but we are very encouraged by the data that we have. my job and the job of my team is to come to work every day and develop novel breakthrough therapies witfor people with terrible afflictions. we have new drugs that we want to get approval for by late 2009 as well. that is really where we are focused building a great innovative biotechnology company that can deliver real value to patients. >> you are operating on a net loss, when can you tell your investors that you will turn a profit? will this help you turn a profit? >> that is something that is going to be determined very much by market size and how fast we have potential. those are things that are ahead of us and things that we are researching. we are researching what the costs will be. what we can say is that we think a very large number of patients are likely or potentially could benefit from this drug if it is approved. we think that ultimately it will take the company to a new place where we can function on our own, be profitable, and develop additional therapies that will help other patients. >> the estimate is about 500 million annually when a drug goes globally, is that a fair estimate? >> i am delighted to be here that but we will do our own work. over time we will develop our own internal estimates. >> what about your sales? do you have the sales force to action the market this drug if and when it gets approved? > we do. we have about 65 professionals who are very experienced salespeople in the pharmaceutical industry. we are selling a drug right now which treats very severe symptoms of diseases like ms and a stroke and spinal cord industry. that sales force, that commercial organization, is now cash flow neutral. we are selling enough of the drug to support the entire commercial organization and free up our capital for the innovative programs that we have. wheat wilwe will need to increase that sells forced to sell the new drug in the u.s.. >> i have wondered about the competition. if there are many people out there with multiple cirrhosis treatments. -- multiple sclerosis treatments. > it is completely different and potentially complementary. the existing drugs slow down the number of new attacks that the immune system amounts on the nervous system in people with multiple sclerosis. this is something that has different. it-it goes to the nerve fibers that have been damaged and it allows them to conduct electrical impulses. it actually restores the ability of those nerve to conduct and we have shown that that results in improved walking ability which is a major issue. there are two different benefits that patients could get.</media:text>

<media:text>CMBREAKPOINT >> CHINA GETS A LOT OF PRESS FOR ITS ECONOMIC GROWTH AND HOW IT IS QUICKLY BECOMING A WORLD ECONOMIC POWER HOUSE BUT YOU MAY NOT HEAR A LOT ABOUT THE FLIP SIDE, DISEASE. HEPATITIS B, CHINA ACCOUNTS FOR MORE THAN A THIRD OF THE CASES AND OBESITY AFFECTS 90 MILLION. IT ALSO HAS POOR AIR QUALITY AND 350 MILLION SMOKERS, MEANING SURGING RATES IN ASTHMA, CANCER. BUT IT HAS NOT BEEN MATCHED IN THE GROWTH OF WESTERN-STYLE MEDICINE. MANY REMAIN LOYAL TO AGE-OLD TREATMENTS LIKE GINGER ROOT, ACUPUNCTURE. FOR PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES IT MEANS A HUGE POTENTIAL. CHINA ACCOUNTS FOR 2 PERCENT OF THE GLOBAL DRUG MARKET CMBREAKPOINT ACCORDING TO A RESEARCH FIRM. CHINA' S POPULATION IS 1.3 BILLION, MORE THAN THE COMBINED POPULATION OF THE U.S. AND EUROPE WHICH ACCOUNT FOR 78% OF WORLD PHARMACEUTICAL SALES. CHINA' S DRUG MARKET HAS MORE THAN TRIPLED SINCE 1997 AND IS EXPECTED TO NEARLY DOUBLE BY 2010. THERE ARE BARRIERS, HOWEVER. TO EXPLAIN THIS IS A HEALTH ANALYST. LET' S START BY ASKING WHY CHINESE CULTURE EMBRACES WESTERN CONSUMER GOODS BUT HAS BEEN TOUGHER ON WESTERN MEDICINE. >> IT HAS BEEN A CHALLENGE FOR MANY REASONS. TRADITIONALLY CHINESE MEDICINE HAS BEEN A STAPLE OF THE CHINESE CULTURE AND THAT HAS INHIBITED THE GROWTH. BUT THAT IS CHANGING. IF YOU LOOK AT THE MOST RECENT DATA WE PROJECT THE PHARMACEUTICAL MARKET FOR WESTERN MEDICINES WILL GROW ABOUT 20% IN 2007. IN FACT, THE THIRD QUARTER DATA CMBREAKPOINT SAYS IT GREW ABOUT 29%. GROWTH IS DEFINITELY TAKING OFF AND WE SEE THAT AS PART OF SOME OF THE FACTORS YOU MENTIONED. O.B.T., ISSUES AROUND DIABETES -- OBESITY. THERE WILL BE 37 MILLION CHINESE BY 20/205 WITH OF DIABETES. IN SMOKING -- BY 2025 47 MILLION CHINESE WITH DIABETES. THE BALANCE IS HOW THE CHINESE SEE THIS. THEY WANT TO BALANCE WHAT THEY TAKE WITH TRADITIONAL MEDICINE WITH A LOT OF THE WESTERN MEDICATIONS. >> WHAT KIND OF INVESTMENTS ARE WESTERN DRUG MAKERS MAKING? ARE THEY DOING ENOUGH TO CHANGE MINDS AND WALLETS? >> THEY CAN' T ADVERTISE ON TV LIKE IN THE U.S. BUT THEY ARE VERY INVOLVED IN A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT THINGS TO TRY TO INCREASE AWARENESS. A LOT OF COMPANIES ARE PARTING WITH THE GOVERNMENT. THE GOVERNMENT HAVE A CLEAR AGENDA CMBREAKPOINT F INCREASING THE DOMESTIC PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES OF THE SMART WESTERN COMPANIES ARE WORKING WITH THEM. NOVARTIS HAS SET UP DRUG DISCOVERY AND DEVELOPMENT CENTERS IN CHINA. OTHER COMPANIES ARE BALKING AT LICENSING OUT PRODUCTS IN CHINA TO -- ARE LOOKING AT LICENSING OUT SOME PRODUCTS IN CHINA TO GROW THE DOMESTIC PLAYERS BECAUSE THEY COULD CURRIE FAVOR WITH THE GOVERNMENT. >> I CAN IMAGINE THAT INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY PROTECTION COULD CREATE PROBLEMS. >> OF THE FIRST AND LAST RECENT VIOLATION WITH PFIZER AND VIAGRA AND THAT WAS TWO YEARS, SINCE THEN IT HAS BEEN PRETTY GOOD. IF YOU LOOK AT R&D AREA, THEY ARE LOOKING -- A BIT CAUTIOUS ABOUT THOSE INVESTMENTS. THEY ARE PUTTING ASSETS ON THE GROUND THAT ARE MORE GENERAL IN TERMS OF THE DEVELOPMENT WORK IN THE VERY PROPRIETARY ACTIVITIES ARE STILL CMBREAKPOINT APPENING IN AREAS LIKE THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPE FOR THAT REASON. >> I WOULD THINK COSTS WOULD BE LOWER. >> COSTS ARE SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER. IT DEPENDS ON WHICH STUDY, BUT BETWEEN 30% UP TO 60% LOWER. A LOT OF THE CUTS YOU READ ABOUT, NOVARTIS, BRISTOL-MYERS, THAT THEY HAVE TAKEN, UNDOUBTEDLY THAT WILL CREATE JOBS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN CHINA. >> AS YOU CREATE THE JOBS, THE THE CHINESE HAVE THE EDUCATION AND BACKGROUND TO FILL THEM? >> IF YOU LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF EDUCATED ENGINEERS, SCIENTISTS, CHEMISTS, THE NUMBERS ARE FORMIDABLE. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN IMPRESSED ABOUT CHINESE SOCIETY AS A WHOLE. THEY ARE VERY SMART PEOPLE. A VERY STRONG PUSH FOR EDUCATION GENERALLY. IF YOU LOOK AT THE NUMBERS AND OPPORTUNITY, YES, THE WORK FORCE WILL BE THERE. >> WHICH COMPANIES ARE SPENDING THE MOST AND WHICH HAVE THE MOST POTENTIALS? >> THE BIG LEADERS IN THE WESTERN SIDE -- ASTRAZENECA, CMBREAKPOINT SSUES WITH GRAFT AND CORRUPTION. ONE ISSUE IS THEY HAVE NOT SEPARATED PRESCRIBING FROM DISPENSING. WHEN THE DRUGS GO TO THE HOSPITAL THE HOSPITAL MAKES A MARKUP. CREATES STRANGE DYNAMICS, PHYSICIANS PRESCRIBING DRUGS MAY NOT -- THAT MAY NOT BE IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE PATIENT BUT MAKES MONEY FOR THE HOSPITAL. >> HOW QUICKLY WOULD WE BE ABLE TO SEE WESTERN STYLE USE? DO YOU SAY THEY HAVE SUCCEEDED IN PENETRATING THE MARKET? HOW LONG WILL THIS TAKE? >> THE MARKET IS ABOUT $14 BILLION TODAY AND TWO-THIRDS IS DOMESTIC OR GENERIC PLAYERS. TRADITIONALLY OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, BUT DOMESTIC PLAYERS HAVE BEEN TAKING SHARE, BUT THAT HAS CHANGED AND NOW THE WESTERN PLAYERS ARE STARTING TO TAKE MORE SHARE. I WOULD SUSPECT MAYBE THAT WOULD GO UP TO ONE-HALF OR SOMETHING OVER TIME. BUT WHA CMBREAKPOINT IS MOST LIKELY TO HAPPEN IS DOMESTIC PLAYERS WILL INVEST MORE AND THEY WILL REALIZE RESEARCHED BEST BASED MEDICINE IS THE KEY AND NOT THROUGH COPPING -- RESEARCH- BASED MEDICINE IS THE KEY AND IT IS NOT THROUGH COPYING. BUT THE QUESTION IS WHETHER THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT WILL ENFORCE IT. I THINK THEY WILL WITH THE SPATE OF PRODUCT SAFETY RECALLS. >> HERE IS AN UPDATE ON THE SITUATION IN PAKISTAN. FORMER PRIME MINISTER BENAZIR BHUTTO' S PARTY VICE-CHAIRMAN FAHIM IS SPEAKING TO REPORTERS. HE SAID THE PARTY WILL BE MORNING HER FOR 40 DAYS AND SHE WILL BE BURIED IN HER ANCESTRAL GRAVEYARD. HE WAS SITTING NEXT TO HER IN THE CAR WHEN SHE WAS KILLED. HE CANNOT CONFIRM WHETHER IT WAS BULLETS OR A BOMB THAT KILLED HER. SHE WAS WAVING FROM THE SUN ROOF. </media:text>

<media:text> >> shares of all races pharmaceuticals rising as much as 30% today. -- isis pharmaceuticals. it will buy the -- genzyme will license its cholesterol lowering drug and will uy 5 million shares, which is $150 million. joining us to talk about it is the ceo, stanley crooke. it really glad to have you. tell us more about the product. how is it better than what is the potential market value? >> it is a second-generation -- it is a very selective in his battle -- and her brother. -- inhibit. what makes it unique is that it lowers all lipid and has a linear dose response curve the works the same in every patient who sees -- works in the present cost of a moderate or high doses patents court in the absence equally well. it is a drug that will be used for patients who have high cholesterol who are at high cardiovascular risk and cannot get to the target with other drugs. it also does not have drug/drug interactions or toxicities so it is an ideal drug for patients who have had a heart attack, for example, form to but they are off on 10 or 11 other drugs. >> why did you feel the need to take on a partner? >> our strategy from inception was to invent the technology, created a large group of drugs and licensed the drug prior to beginning of large phase 3 trials. we think our model makes much more sense before a technology as efficient as this. we have been in the process of licensing it for the past six or seven months, and we decided that genzyme was right partner. >> the larger picture, stanley. you found that basis, at least seven the past, because you said big harmaceutical our diet -- dinosaurs that cannot adjust. will biotech lead the way permanently? >> i do think we need to experiment with new technologies, and i think they are poorly managed in large pharmaceuticals, and we have to experiment with new models of the company. the model we have in mind is a very different one from a fully integrated pharmaceutical companies. over time i think we will find solutions that include productivity in both technology and organizational base. >> if that is a case, would you be an attractive target with a big pharmaceutical company? would you sell? >> certainly not at these prices. i think things we doubt about licensing this drug to genzyme, a relationship that certainly does not mean we are being acquired and some ways protect us from an unwanted acquisition. >> you mentioned the connection to genzyme. it gives the country preferred asked -- access to future treatments. what does it mean, the right of first refusal? >> basically on similar types of terms. so, these drugs that we develop them do not cross an intact blood brain barrier so they have to be administered directly into the spinal column so they would be geared to the very severe diseases like alzheimer' s, like als, and genzyme, of course, is an ideal partner to commercialize those drugs as well. a new area that we are excited about. >> you -- thank you very much. >> stock markets in china, india, brazil, turkey all had gains last year. more in 2008? your active investor has a fund with a return of 36%. </media:text>

<media:text>CMBREAKPOINT >> ALMOST 90 MINUTES INTO THE TRADING DAY, AND THE DOW, S&P AND THE NAVTEQ REMAIN HIGHER AND NEAR THE HIGHS OF THE SESSION. THE DOW IS UP 100, THE S&P GAINING A 11, AND IT IS FINANCIALS, MATERIALS, AND ENERGY STOCKS HELPING LEAD THE S&P. IN TERMS OF THE NASDAQ, WE ARE UP ALMOST 16 ON THE NASDAQ. LET US START WITH THE TREASURY MARKET, BECAUSE WE ARE SEEING TREASURY PRICES DROPPING, DOWN 15/32 ON THE 10-YEAR, THE YIELD AT 4.17%. WE DID GET THE PENDING HOME SALES MORE THAN ECONOMISTS HAD EXPECTED, AND YOU CAN SEE THE TWO-YEAR NOTE IS DOWN 1/32, THE YIELD AT 3.12%. WELL, CMBREAKPOINT ERCK WAS THE FDA TO LET IT SELL ITS CHOLESTEROL MEDICINE OVER-THE-COUNTER BUT THAT MAY CAUSE THE DRUGMAKER SOME PROBLEMS WITH DOCTORS. JOINING US NOW IS OUR REPORTER COVERING THE STORY FOR US TODAY. SHANNON, LET US GET YOUR SENSE OF WHY MERCK WANTS TO DO THIS AND WHY DOCTORS ARE OPPOSED? >> THESE CHOLESTEROL DRUGS ARE THE MOST PRESCRIBED IN AMERICA. THEY HAVE $16 BILLION IN SALES AND THE U. S., AT VERY POPULAR DRUGS. MERCK WANTS TO SELL ONE OF ITS OLDER DRUGS WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION. DOCTORS SAY THEY DO NOT THINK PATIENTS CAN SAFELY TAKE THEM AND PROBABLY TAKE THEM WITHOUT A DOCTOR' S SUPERVISION, WITHOUT SOMEONE DIAGNOSING THEIR HIGH CHOLESTEROL, WITHOUT SOMEONE TELLING THEM WHAT IT HAS GOTTEN LOW ONE OF. AND ALSO WITHOUT SOMEONE BEING ABLE TO MONITOR FOR SIDE EFFECTS EVEN THOUGH THE DRUGS ARE RELATIVELY SAFE. >> WHY DOES MERCK THINK THE SELDOM OVER THE COUNTER? >> THE COMPANY THINKS THERE ARE A LOT OF CMBREAKPOINT MERICANS, 14 MILLION, WHO ARE NOT TAKING A CHOLESTEROL DRUG BUT THE BENEFIT. THEY ARE SAY MORE WOULD BE LIKELY TO TAKE ONE IF IT IS OVER THE COUNTER, IF THEY WOULD NOT HAVE TO COME IN FOR A PRESCRIPTION REFILL. >> WHAT ABOUT THE FDA? WOULD LIKELY BE PASSED? >> ANALYSTS ARE NOT EXPECTING IT TO BE APPROVED BY THE FDA. MERCK TRIED THIS IN 2000, IN 2005, ABOUT TIME THE FDA SAID THEY DID NOT THINK PATIENTS COULD APPROPRIATELY TAKE. THEY WERE CONCERNED PEOPLE WHO DID NOT NEED THE DRUG WOULD TAKE IT BECAUSE THEY WERE CONCERNED ABOUT IT BECAUSE THEY WERE OVERWEIGHT OR CONCERN THAT PATIENTS WOULD TAKE IT AND THEN NOT GO TO GET CHECKED OUT TO SEA OF THE CHOLESTEROL GOT LOWER. >> TALK ABOUT THE STANDARDS. BEHALF OF THE STANDARD DRUGS MUST ME TO BE SOLD OVER THE COUNTER. >> OF COURSE, IT HAS TO BE PROVED THAT IT IS SAFE AND EFFECTIVE. THEY ALSO -- THEY ARE DRUGS WHERE PEOPLE CAN SELF DIAGNOSED LIKE A HEADACHE. CMBREAKPOINT IT IS EASY TO TELL IF YOU HAVE A HEADACHE. BUT FOR CHOLESTEROL YOU NEED TO GO TO A DOCTOR OR CLINIC. >> NOW, AS WELL, MERCK HOLDING AN ANALYST DAY TOMORROW. WHAT SHOULD INVESTORS EXPECT? >> THEY WILL BE UPDATING EVERYONE ON THE PIPELINE. THERE ARE A FEW COMPOUNDS THAT EVERYONE IS WATCHING -- ONE FOR OBESITY, AN APPETITE SUPPRESSANT, AND ONE THAT WOULD RAISE GOOD CHOLESTEROL TO HELP LOWER ARTERY CLOGGING THAT CHOLESTEROL. THOSE ARE TWO PEOPLE WILL BE WATCHING CLOSELY TO SEE IF THE FDA WILL MOVE THOSE INTO THE NEXT STAGES TO GET APPROVAL. >> THANKS SOMEWHAT, FOLLOWING MERCK STORY, AND OF COURSE SHE WILL FOLLOW THE ANALYST MEETING TOMORROW. FINALLY, THE ONLY MAJOR NEW MOVIE THIS WEEK AND GRABBED THE TOP SPOT AT THE BOX OFFICE, THE FANTASY FILM "THE GOLD AND COMPASS -- GOLDEN COMPASS </media:text>

<media:text>CMBREAKPOINT M MICHAEL MCKEE. >> WE' RE GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW THE MARKETS ARE MOVING. DOW JONES, S&P 500 AND NASDAQ ARE ALL CLEARLY HIGHER, JUST ABOVE INTRADAY HIGHS. WE WILL SHOW YOU THE 10-YEAR NOTE IS DOING, ONE DAY BEFORE THE FED DECISION. THERE YOU HAVE IT. DOWN 10/32, YIELD AT 4.14%. >> SHARES OF MILLENNIUM ARE JUMPING. ABOUT 9% HIGHER. VELCADE STOPPED THE CANCER FROM BEING ACTIVE IN 1/3 OF NEW PATIENTS. SHARES OF THE RIVAL ARE FALLING ON THE NEWS. 35% OF THOSE THAT TOOK VELCADE HAD A COMPLETE REMISSION, COMPARED WITH 5% OF RON IMMUNE DRUGS ALONE. IN A BLUEBERRY IS LISTEN, WE' JOINED BY DEBORAH DUNSIRE, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF MILLENNIUM PHARMACEUTICALS -- IN A BLOOMBERG EXCLUSIVE. SHE COMES TO US FROM ATLANTA. DOES THIS CHANGE THE COMPETITIVENESS BETWEEN YOUR DRUG AND A COMPETITOR? >> VELCADE HAS BEEN MOVING INTO THE FRON CMBREAKPOINT INES. NOW WE' RE SEEING THE SAME THING IN THE FRONT LINE SETTING. THIS IS GREAT NEWS FOR PATIENTS. I THINK WE HAVE THREE VELCADE STAGE THREE TRIALS THREE PRESENTED AT THIS MEETING IN THE FRONT LINE SOMETHING. WE SEE THAT VELCADE CAN BE COMBINED WITH A WIDE VARIETY OF AGENTS. I THINK AS OTHER COMPETITORS, TO THE MARKET, WE WILL SEE THE RIGHT COMBINATION COME TOGETHER FOR MYELOMA PATIENTS. AS YOU KNOW, YOUR BEST SHOT AT CURING CANCER IS GETTING IT EARLY. THAT IS WHAT THE DATA WITH VELCADE AND THE FRONT LINE SETTINGS SHOW. IT IS SO IMPORTANT. >> WAS THE MOST MEANINGFUL, PRECISE DATA THAT YOU SAW YESTERDAY? IT WAS -- WAS THE MOST MEANINGFUL DATA? >> THERE WERE TWO TRIALS, ONE IN TITIAN' S NOT ELIGIBLE FOR TRANSPLANTS, WHICH IS THE MAJORITY OF MELANOMA PATIENTS. -- ONE IS IN THE MAJORITY OF PERRY CMBREAKPOINT ATIENTS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR TRANSPLANTS. THEN WE SAW VELCADE INCREASE OUR MISSION IN 35% OF PATIENTS. COMPLETE REMISSION THE -- THE ABSENCE OF THE DISEASE. THAT IS A VERY GOOD SURROGATE AND PREDICTOR. OVERALL, EVEN THOUGH THE FOLLOW- UP IS RELATIVELY SHORT. WE HAVE NOT FOLLOWED THIS FOR YEARS AND YEARS. EVEN WITH A MEDIUM OF A 16 MONTH FOLLOW-UP, THERE ARE THE STATISTICAL SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE VELCADE AND THE ARMED NOT CONTAINING VELCADE. THIS AGENT CAN GIVE THEM A BETTER SHOT AT SURVIVAL. CUESTAS AS A CHANGE PETRAEUS STANDARDS? -- >> DOES THIS CHANGE TREATMENT STANDARDS? >> THIS BRINGS A WHOLE NEW OPTION FOR WORD. IN ADDITION TO VELCADE THE TRIAL TO -- IN ADDITION TO THE VELCADE TRIAL, WE ALSO SAW IT PREVENTED CMBREAKPOINT N ANOTHER TEST. IT SHOWED OUTSTANDING COMPLETE REMISSION RATE. -- IT SHOWED OUTSTANDING COMPLETELY PERMISSION RATES BEFORE A BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT AND THEN AFTER A BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT. WE HAVE SEEN THAT VELCADE COMBINED WITH VERY DIFFERENT THERAPIES TAKES EACH OF THOSE TO A NEW LEVEL. THAT' S WHY I THINK THIS DATA IS SO IMPORTANT WHEN NEWLY DIAGNOSED MELANOMA PATIENTS. NO MATTER WHAT THE THERAPY THEY HAVE BEEN ON, VELCADE CAN TAKE IT TO A NEW LEVEL AND POTENTIALLY OFFER THEM A BETTER SHOT AT A CURE FOR LONG-TERM SURVIVAL OF -- OR LONG-TERM SURVIVAL. >> WHEN YOU EXPECT TO GET A APPROVAL FOR THIS? >> OF FALLS AT MILLENNIUM ARE WORKING VERY HARD TO INSURE THAT WE CAN SUBMIT THE PROPER DRUG BY THE END OF THIS YEAR. -- OUR FOLKS AT MILLENNIUM ARE WORKING VERY HARD. THIS TRIAL WAS ONLY STARTED IN SEPTEMBER. CMBREAKPOINT ITHOUT THE FDA, FULL PRIORITY REVIEW, IS UP TO THE FDA WHETHER THIS DATA WILL BE AFFORDED THAT PRIORITY REVIEW. WE CANNOT GUARANTEE IT. DURING 2008, WE WILL HAVE AN APPROVAL IN THE FRONT LINE SETTING. >> WE TALKED ABOUT WHAT THIS WOULD DO FOR PATIENTS. WHAT DOES IT DO FOR MILLENNIUM? AND ANALYSTS YESTERDAY SAID THE STUDY' S FINDINGS HAD BEEN ANTICIPATED, YET THE STOCK IS SOARING ANYWAY. PEOPLE THINK YOU' LL MAKE A LOT OF MONEY. >> IN BROAD AS THE POPULATION OF MYLAN AMONG PATIENTS. WE HAVE SEEN -- IT PROMOTES THE MAJORITY OF THE MELANOMA PATIENTS. IT IS THE CITY 5000 PATIENTS IN THE U.S. ABOUT 50% OF THEM ARE IN THE FRONT LINE. PEOPLE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS WILL BE WIDELY USED IN THE FRONT LINE MYELIN, SETTING. IT OPENS UP A VERY LARGE A NEW MARKET FOR US. >> THANK YOU VERY MUCH FO </media:text>

<media:text>CMBREAKPOINT OINTS. S&P AS WELL WITH FINANCIALS LEADING THE WAY. THE NASDAQ HIGHER BY 10 POINTS. THE BEST MEMBERS IN THE S&P, FINANCIALS. BANK OF AMERICA AT THE DOLLAR RIGHT NOW. JPMORGAN CHASE UP OVER A DOLLAR. EXXON MOBIL UP 44 CENTS. CELGENE SHARES HIT A HARD TODAY AFTER CRITICAL RESULTS OF ITS CANCER DRUG DISAPPOINTED INVESTORS. AT ONE POINT, THE STOCK WAS DOWN. TODAY MUCH MORE THAN IT WAS. YOU CAN SEE, CELGENE STOCK IS DOWN RIGHT NOW $6.66 PER SHARE. IN RETROSPECT, THAT LOOKS PRETTY GOOD. IT WAS DOWN AS MUCH AS $10.15 EARLIER ON IN THE SESSION. BUT DID THE MARKET AND DID INVESTORS OVERREACT TO THE NEWS? WE' RE JOINED BY TELEPHONE FROM RIGID BY SOL BARER, THE CEO OF CELGENE. WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM. DID THE MARKETS OVERREACT TO THIS NEWS? >> I ABSOLUTELY THINK SO. A LOT OF THIS CMBREAKPOINT AS IN THE MISINTERPRETATION AND MISUNDERSTANDING OF STANDING DATA THAT CAME OUT YESTERDAY ON OUR DRUG WHICH IS BEING USED TO TREAT CANCERS. THE DATA INCLUDE AN UNPRECEDENTED SURVIVAL DATA FROM AN INDEPENDENT STUDY FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED PATIENTS THAT SHOWED TWO OF THE HIGHEST OVERALL SURVIVAL FOR PATIENTS IN HISTORY AT ANY PHASE OF TRIAL. THERE WAS ANOTHER UNPRECEDENTED TRIAL. THIS IS ALL FROM AND ALL OF THEIR PEOPLE -- ALL THE THERAPY PILL. I THINK THERE WAS A GOOD DEAL OF MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE DATA. >> THIS TALK ABOUT THAT DATA AND THE DRUG ON ITS OWN. OUR STUDY INDICATES THAT IT IS A GOOD DRUG, CMBREAKPOINT UT AT THE SAME TIME IT MIGHT NOT HAVE SAVED AS MANY LIVES AS PEOPLE THOUGHT IT MIGHT. WAS IT A CASE OF MORE THE MARKET SIMPLY UPRISING IN TO MANY EXPECTATIONS? >> I CANNOT COMMENT IN TERMS OF THE MARKET EXPECTATIONS. I CAN TELL YOU WE WERE EXTREMELY PLEASED WITH THE RESULTS OF THESE STUDIES. IT IS GREAT NEWS FOR PATIENTS. IT REALLY SHOWS THAT WE' MAKING SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS TOWARD OUR OBJECTIVE OF TURNING MULTIPLE MYELOMA INTO A CHRONIC DISEASE. WE HAVE REALLY NEVER BEEN MORE OPTIMISTIC REGARDING 2007/2008 AS WE EXPAND. NOT ONLY FROM THE UNITED STATES, BUT IT IS BEING LAUNCHED IN COUNTRIES IN EUROPE. WE EXPECT TO CONTINUE THAT END 2008. WE' RE LOOKING FOR APPROVALS IN CANADA AND AUSTRALIA. IT IS A GLOBAL DRUG FOR PATIENTS. >> THIS TALK ABOUT WHAT CITIGROUP IS SAYING. THEY THOUGHT TODAY' S PRICE CMBREAKPOINT ACTION WAS OVERDONE. THAT IS COMING UP DIRECTLY WITH A CITIGROUP ANALYST NODE. SECONDLY, THEY DID PATIENTS WHO RECEIVED A TREND SET -- TRANSPLANTS NEGATIVELY IMPACTED THE DATA AND THE DATA WAS ACTUALLY VERY MUCH MORE POSITIVE FOR A NON-TRANSPLANT PATIENT. TELL US ABOUT THE STUDY IN HOW IT RELATES. >> THIS IS FROM THIS INDEPENDENT NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE GROUP WHICH WAS A MAJOR STUDY THAT LOOKED AT THE DRUG AND ITS EFFECT ON NEWLY DIAGNOSED MYELOMA PATIENTS. WHAT HAPPENED IN SOME OF THE PATIENTS WAS THAT THEY WENT ON TO HAVE A TRANSPLANT OF SOME SORT WHICH IS A USUAL OCCURRENCE, AND ABOUT 40% OF THE PATIENTS. THE REST OF THE PATIENTS STAYED ON DRUGS. APPARENTLY, WHAT THEY ARE REFERRING TO IS THE STATEMENT THAT THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR FROM THE MAYO CLINIC SAID IS THAT THE PATIENTS THAT WENT ON TO THE STATE OF THE ART TRANSPLANT ACTUALLY DID NOT DO CMBREAKPOINT ELL AS NEARLY AS THE PATIENTS WHO STAYED ON THE DRUG. AND THOSE WHO STAYED ON THE DRUG HAD A 99% OVERALL SURVIVAL WHICH WAS REALLY PRETTY IMPRESSIVE. SO IT REALLY SHOWS THAT WE' MAKING THIS GREAT PROGRESS IN HAVING A PILL A DAY FOR PATIENTS WHO HAVE DEADLY DISEASES. >> DE YOU AGREE WITH CITIGROUP' S POINT THAT THE COMPETITOR TO THE DRUG -- BAILEY DID THE EFFICACY BUT DID NOT LOOK AT THE TOXICITY DATA. >> I THINK THAT WHENEVER YOU GET EVERY DRUG INCLUDING THIS ONE IS THAT YOU HAVE TO LOOK A BOTH SIDES OF THE COIN. YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THIS, AND AT THE END OF THE DAY, EVERY NEW DRUG IS IMPORTANT. WE' RE NOT AT THE POINT OF HEARING THIS DISEASE. HOPEFULLY EVERY PATIENT WILL SEE EVERY THERAPY AVAILABLE. THIS IS A BOOK -- CMBREAKPOINT OOD DRUG AND IS GREAT FOR PATIENTS. HAVING SAID THAT, WE THINK IT HAS POTENTIAL LEAD VINTAGES IN TERMS -- ADVANTAGES. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GO OFTEN TO DOCTORS. IT GOES ON AND ON. COMBINE THAT WITH THE SURVIVAL DATA. >> CEO OF CELGENE JOINING US BY TELEPHONE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. WE APPRECIATE IT. >> WE' RE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THE COMPANY. I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE EXCITED ABOUT AS BUILDING A MAJOR GLOBAL HEMATOLOGY ONTOLOGY COMPANY. WE LOOK FORWARD TO ADDITIONAL DATA ON THE DRUG. >> THANK YOU VERY MUCH. WE WILL BE BACK WITH THE CHART OF THE DAY AND WHAT WE MAY HAVE A TO PROP FED. STICK AROUND. -- WE MAY HAVE A TOO PROUD FED. </media:text>

THEY SPOKE ON A CONFERENCE CALL THIS MORNING. SHARES WERE DOWN MUCH OF THE MORNING AND THEY JUST TURNED A COUPLE OF CENTS PAS TO THE. >> THEY OPTIMISTIC YET CONSERVATIVE OUTLOOK PROVIDED BY THEIR CEO DID NOT IMPRESS THE EARLY INVESTORS OF EARLY TRADING THIS MORNING WAS ANY INDICATION. BUT DESPITE THIS PREDICTING PROFITS FOR NEXT YEAR, SHARES OF GOMA WERE ALL MORNING UNTIL JUST NOW MOVING INTO POSITIVE AT ONE POINT THEY WERE MORE THAN $2 LOWER, THE LARGEST DROP IN THE YEAR. DURING THE CONFERENCE CALL THE NATION' S THIRD LARGEST PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY SAID TODAY IT EXPECTS HIGHER SALES OF THE SOUL CMBREAKPOINT - CANCER DRUG TO OFFSET LOSS OF REVENUE AND FROM ITS OSTEOPOROSIS DRUG GOING OFF PATENT. IT EXPECTS DOUBLE-DIGIT EARNINGS BY 2010. TO THAT, THE COMPANY ESTIMATED PROFITS OF 2008 OF $3.28 OF 2 $3.38 A SHARE, AND THE HIGH END MEETS SURVEYS BY BLOOMBERG. >> MERCK HAS A FORTRESS BALANCE SHEET AND HAS A GOOD PROFILE GOING FORWARD. EXPECTATIONS MAY BE TRIMMED BY THINK THE LONGER TERM STORY IS THAT THIS IS A GOOD NAME, A HEALTHY NAME AND ONE THAT IS PROBABLY NOT ON A LOT OF PORTFOLIOS. >> THE COMPANY NEEDS TO REPLACE REVENUE FROM THE COMPANY' OSTEOPOROSIS DRUG WITH ANNUAL SALES OF $3.1 BILLION MAY DROP BY NEARLY $2 BILLION FROM GENERIC COMPETITION. IT WANTS T CMBREAKPOINT EXPAND THE MARKET FOR GUARD SO FAR MORE AGE GROUPS, AND ON THE PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENTS SUGGESTED FOR GIRLS 11 YEARS OLD TO 12 YEARS OLD. THEY' RE LOOKING FOR INCREASED SALES OF ATTACKS DIABETES DRUG. SHARES ARE JUST UP AND FOR THE YEAR THEY REMAIN UP MORE THAN 30 PERCENT. MERCK REMAINS A TOP PERFORMER OF THE 14-MEMBER S&P 500 PHARMACEUTICAL INDEX. INTRODUCING SIX NEW DRUGS SINCE 2005, THE TOP AND BREAK A FIVE- YEAR LONG STREAK OF DECLINING PROFITS TRIGGERED BY PROBLEMS WITH VIOXX AND LOSS OF PATENT PROTECTION FOR ITS CHOLESTEROL DRUG. >> LET US GO BACK TO GARDASIL. WHAT WILL IT DO TO EXPAND THE MARKET? >> IT HAS BEEN A BIG HIT BUT ONLY CONFINED TO YOUNG WOMEN. THEY' RE TRYING TO GET IT APPROVED FOR ALL AGE GROUPS AND IS ROLLING OUT MARKETING WORLDWIDE. CMBREAKPOINT > THANK YOU VERY MUCH. LET US GET MORE ON MERCK AND PHARMACEUTICALS AS A WHOLE, JOINING US IS AN ANALYST FROM LEHMAN BROTHERS. MERCK HAS BEEN TROUNCING ITS COMPETITORS, SECOND-BEST PERFORMER IN THE DOW THIS YEAR. HAS ALL THE GAIN BEEN WIPED OUT ALREADY? >> AN EXCELLENT QUESTION. WE ACTUALLY DO NOT THINK SO. I WILL EXPLAIN WHY. PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES VALUATIONS GO UP BECAUSE THEY PRODUCE NEW PRODUCTS. TYPICALLY THOSE NEW PRODUCTS, IF THEY ARE GOOD AND THERE IS THE MAN, DO BETTER THAN EXPECTED. SO, AS YOUR REPORTER POINTED OUT IN YOUR PIECE EARLIER, THE NEW PRODUCTS MERCK ROLLED OUT, THE VACCINES, THEY HAVE OUTPERFORMED EXPECTATIONS. OTHERS HAVE OUTPERFORMED EXPECTATIONS. MOREOVER, THERE HAS BEEN A LACK OF COMPETITION. THERE WILL BE COMPETITION THIS YEAR, BUT THE COMPETITION THAT CMBREAKPOINT IS COMING FROM GLAXO, FOR EXAMPLE, WITH CERBEREX, AND THE VACCINE WHICH WILL COMPETE IN THE OVERALL GROWTH. BUT WE THINK MERCK IS VERY WELL- POSITIONED. YOU GET FIRST MARKET ADVANTAGE. NUMBER TWO, THE VACCINE GARDASIL ATTACKS FOUR DIFFERENT STRAINS AND THE GLAXO VACCINE ONLY ATTACKS TWO. MERCK AND EXPAND THE MARKET NOT ONLY BY EXPANDING AGE GROUPS BUT ALSO THEY WILL FILE FOR VACCINATION FOR BOYS, AND THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT. >> FILING FOR APPROVAL FOR USE IN YOUNG MAN IS DIFFERENT THAN GETTING APPROVAL FOR USE IN YOUNG MEN. HOW' D YOU HANDICAP? >> I AM VACCINATED AGAINST GARDASIL, BUT RUBELLA, MEASLES, I WILL NEVER GIVE BIRTH TO A CMBREAKPOINT HILD BUT IT IS A COMMUNITY, I AM VACCINATED BECAUSE -- SO I DID NOT GIVE GERMAN MEASLES TO WOMEN. WITH VOICE, IF YOU' RE GOING TO CURB CERVICAL CANCER YOU NEED IMMUNITY, ID DO THAT, YOU VACCINATE THE ENTIRE POPULATION. IKB AN EXAMPLE. I THINK THE SAME APPLIES WHEN -- I GAVE YOU AN EXAMPLE. WHEN YOUNG BOYS GO TO PEDIATRICIAN THINK IT WILL ASK, MAYBE THIS IS A TIME TO GIVE THE VACCINATION TO YOUR SON. >> LET US TALK ABOUT REVENUE BREAKDOWN BY DRUG. YOU HAVE THREE DRUGS ABOUT OUR DOUBLE DIGIT CONTRIBUTORS. IS IT GOOD? DOES IT PROVIDE ANOTHER HEDGE AGAINST DOWNSIDE FOR ONE DRUG, OR WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE ONE OF THE DRUGS KIND OF AS SURGE UP THERE AND BECOME A MEGA BLOCKBUSTER, SOMETHING THE COMPANY IS KNOWN FOR, LIKE LIPITOR FOR PFIZER. >> A GREAT QUESTION. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE DRUG YOU CMBREAKPOINT ENTIONED, THEY ARE ALL MULTIBILLION-DOLLAR PRODUCTS AND THEIR OWN RIGHT. IN MY OPINION, HAVING WON DRUG OF THAT GENERATES 12 BILLION VS THREE DRUGS THAT GENERATE 3 BILLION EACH MAKES A LOT MORE SENSE BECAUSE YOU HAVE A DIVERSIFICATION AND REVENUE STREAM. SO, WITH LIPITOR GOES OFF PATENT IT IS A LARGE HOLE TO FILL ITS THREE INDIVIDUALS GO OFF PATENT. >> BUT LIPITOR IS LIKE A CULT STATUS, IT IS LIKE PLAVIX, SO WELL KNOWN. DO YOU THINK MERCK SUFFERS FOR THAT BECAUSE IT IS NOT KNOWN FOR ONE OR DRUG SPECIFICALLY? MAYBE IT IS GOOD. >> IT IS SLOW AND STEADY, BUT IT WAS KNOWN FOR ZOCOR FOR QUITE SOME TIME BUT LIPITOR HAPPEN TO BE A BETTER,. MERCK AND SCHERING-PLOUGH, VYTORIN TAKING SHARE FROM LIPITOR. IT IS A BETTER PLAY THAN THE OVERALL CMBREAKPOINT LOBAL PLAYBOOK. >> WE TALKED ABOUT ACROSS THE BOARD FOR ALL OF THEM FROM ALL OF THEM ARE SUFFERING FROM UPCOMING GENERIC COMPETITION. ARE THEY KIND OF GOING IN AND AROUND AND MAKING DEALS OR BUYING GENERIC COMPANIES WHEN THEIR OWN DRUGS GO OFF PATENT THEY ARE THERE TO PICK OF REVENUE? >> ACTUALLY, THEY ARE NOT. NOVARTIS IS THE ONE COMPANY THAT HAVE DONE THAT. THE OVERALL PROFITABILITY OF THE GENERIC BUSINESS TO A BRAND PHARMACEUTICAL BUSINESS -- REMEMBER, A BRAND THE FORM -- PHARMACEUTICAL BUSINESSES OPERATING PROFIT OF ALMOST 40 PERCENT -- IT IS NOT THE SAME. IT IS REALLY ABOUT NEW PRODUCTS. MERCK HAS BEEN GOOD HAVING A PROFITABLE PORTFOLIO. WE WILL SEE AN IMPROVEMENT FOR A DRUG IN CARDIOVASCULAR, AND TO OF THE ZERO NEW FILINGS FOR A DRUG FOR AND OBESITY COMPOUND, THEY ARE BOTH EXPECTED IN 2009 AND CMBREAKPOINT LSO TO THOUSAND NINE A MIGRAINE DRUG AND ANOTHER NOVEL OF OSTEOPOROSIS DRUG. MERCK CONTINUES TO PLOW NEW GROUND WITH THE NOVEL MEDICINES. >> WE WILL GET MORE ON MERCK FROM CHRIS JENNER FROM T. ROWE PRICE. STICK AROUND. ?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~?~? </media:text>

<media:text> summer storms wreaked havoc on travel in the nation's biggest city. city. a soggy mess forced many commuters in new york city to stay home. parts of the subway system were flooded and had to be shut down. and all three major airports in the new york city area reported delays and cancellations. in tonight's your health, a boy who struggled to àsay his own name became a doctor determined to unravel the mystery of stuttering. it's the first real hope for an agonizing problem. abc-6 reporter susan burton is here with the new treatment. susan? relax. calm down. take it slow. if you stutter like at least three million americans, you're probably tired of hearing those words. turns out, stuttering may not be a "nervous" condition after all. the brain may be to blame. ("unacceptable life would be how long you got to live it.") if it's painful to watch, imagine how it feels. stuttering has been a part of john ohman's (o-mun) life since childhood. reading in class or simply ordering lunch was agonizing ("i would order a cheeseburger instead of a hamburger just because it was easier to say.") doctor gerald maguire can relate. from age five through medical school, stuttering made it tough to say his own name. ("when i would get a call or page to one, in-patient service or one, nursing unit, rather than return the call and say, 'this is dr. maguire,' i would run there." that's all changed now that both men are on a new medication. ("this is the part of the brain that times and initiates our speech.") doctor maguire believes stuttering is partly caused by a defect in the part of the brain that controls the "timing" of speech. brain scans of those who stutter show too much dopamine in that area. in studies, the drug pagoclone (pag-a-clone) appears to boost a chemical that blocks dopamine and improves the brain's "timer". <media:text> probably took 40 years.
google has done it in three
years as a public company.
there recognized today as a
great player.
i think it is a sound company.
we have positions in it and we
will maintain them.
just recognize it is going to
slow down in their growth.
>> hold google.
thank you very much.
glaxosmithkline'
s avandia will
now carry the fda strictest
morning about the risk of heart
failure.
the fda announced it will have a
black box labeled outlining an
existing caution.
here to discuss what this means
to glaxosmithkline, the
president of pharmaceuticals,
thank you very much for joining
us.
how much do and does make a
black box warning will
eart avandia sales?
>> not very much.
there has been an existing
morning for many years.
it is well-known and that it
can increase fluid retention
that can cause extra strain on
the heart muscles.
some physicians have treated
the fluid retention.
people with more severe forms of
heart failure -- it has arctic
and said, that the drug should
not be as.
the fda is just try to make the
war is more prominent.
i think most physicians have
understood that.
>> as you say, it is hard enough
to want any kind available may
impact.
historically, for
glaxosmithkline, when you have
to put a label like this on a
drug, what happens to sales?
>> it depends on what kind of
warning.
if it is a brand new warning, it
can have a bigger impact.
it will be new news.
if it is also then that is
existing, there will be some
impact.
there are not a lot of patients
that have heart there that are
on the drug map.
it is not necessarily mean that
all physicians will stop.
individual physicians will make
decisions about individual
patients.
they do have to of me more
cautious -- to do have to be
more cautious.
>> it sounds like you have some
historical data.
is it initial reaction more fear
and the sales tend to slow and
pick that up -- and pick that
up?
>> you cannot generalize.
it depends on what is.
on this one, because it has been
foreshadowed for so long, this
has been coming out for several
months, i think most physicians
are aware of it.
it is not news.
>> does the warning label on
actos actually help avandia?
>> actos has had the same
wording for many years.
most able to look at the two
drugs has been similar.
>> what about the product
itself?
are you going to read and it --
rebrand it?
>> we'
re trying to get position
confidence back up again.
we have all of our field
personnel mobilized and trying
to prevent all the information
that was at the advisory
committee to reassure patients
and physicians.
>> let us talk about your
pipeline.
we have talked a lot about
avandia.
what is in your pipeline?
how does it look for
glaxosmithkline for the rest of
the year?
>> we have a strong pipeline.
we'
re strong on our oncology
pipeline.
we of a lot of news in oncology.
we have a number of vaccines for
the prevention of cervical
cancer.
planning to launch a new drug
migraines.
we have a number of new drugs.
we are excited about the
pipeline.
>> a pleasure.
thank you very much.
more on faugh google as it
marks its our anniversary of its
ipo.
we'
ll also talk about goldman
sachs big move.

<media:text> >> the volatility in the markets
these days is a reminder of the
adage that one should invest for
the long term.
our play of the day is a long-
term story
ccording to a
portfolio manager at eastern
investment advisors.
he has more than 39,000 shares
in this company and he joins us
to talk about it.
go ahead and in your play of the
day and tell us what the stock
price will rise.
>> hi, laurie.
the stock is at novartis -- hi,
lori.
the stock is norvartis.
it is one of our top picks in
that sector.
if you look at the stock, and
has had admittedly a tough go.
the first half of the year, key
products of theirs and the -- in
the product area went generic
sooner than expected.
a drug for diabetes called dp4
got an approval letter, which
basically means it will not be
launched until 2010.
his is a stock that has had
some real disappointments.
that said, and you have got a
company that has a world-class
management.
they have one of the largest
generic businesses and denture
the world that is growing 10%
per year.
-- in the world that is growing
10% per year.
they have a franchise with a
recently launched drug.
this company near-term can
certainly whether it these near-
term disappointment.
long term they have a great
pipeline.
we think the stock has been
punished and appropriate.
>> how patient to have to be
with no near-term catalysts?
>> that is a good question.
the pharmaceutical sector is
very attractive.
even in the absence of no
catalyst, you could have
multiple expansions as people
who are concerned about a
slowing economy
ove over to
defensive sectors.
you do not necessarily need a
catalyst to go higher in the
near term.
that said, there are key
catalyst for this company, and
mended lake, a little further
route.
their follow-up drug to their
blockbuster is expected to be
approved in the fall of this
year.
they have interesting clinical
data coming out on a drug which
should help the stock moved
higher.
you have got catalysts.
an environment where you have
got very good thought you
rations, more defensive market,
the stock could move higher even
with catalysts being further
out.
>> wine by novartis out with the
market'
s volatility?
>> by that time, the stocks
reflect
hose events very
quickly.
our view is that we believe
management position that the new
drug will be a very significant
drug.
we believe it will be a
excellent follow-up to gleevech.
unfortunately, the market is
very conservative right now.
anything positive happens to a
low-ball you stop, the stock is
going to move.
-- low-value stock, the stock
is going to move.
we are contrarian.
if you wait, if you are going to
lose your chance.
>> another issue facing no
virus -- facing novartis is a
class-action discrimination
suit.
is this going to be a factor?
>> not over the long term.
usually with lawsuits like
this, it can be a psychological
verhang, but the overall
outlays are going to be
diminished for the company.
>> your price target for
novartis?
>> right now, we are expecting
-- we do not have a specific
target, but we expect 20% higher
than the current level.
>> thank you very much, damon
barglow.
>> the two largest home loan
companies are surging today.
sandra smith joins us for a look
at the toro and what is
happening.
>> freddie mac and fannie mae
are quietly working their way
higher in trading today.
the government- back
companies are up 10% today.
the most in five years.
the biggest jump in freddie mac
shares in almost seven years.

<media:text> after a 30-year search, scientists have found a new gene implicated in multiple sclerosis. as doctor timothy johnson tells us in tonight's health headlines... this breakthrough could lead to new treatments and maybe even a cure. cure. dr. timothy johnson reporting multiple sclerosis - also known as ms - is a disorder that is still clouded in mystery. patients with ms endure a progressive breakdown in the protective coating around their nerve connections, but the causes of the disease have been difficult to determine. now for the first time in three decades, scientists have new genetic clues to ms. they used the latest techniques to scan the entire genetic code of thousands of ms patients and healthy people. findings reveal that a paticular immune system gene is linked to ms. the gene helps control immune system cells that patrol the body looking for harmful invaders, and people with a variant of this gene have a 20 per cent increase in the risk of ms. malfunctions in this gene may partly explain why the immune system of an ms patient mistakenly attacks the patient's body, causing the breakdown of nerve cells. the discovery doesn't explain everything about ms risk -- other genes and the environment also contribute. but researchers say these new genetic clues put them one step closer to better tests and treatments for ms. with this medical minute, i'm doctor timothy johnson an f-d-a panel votes to allow the diabetes drug, "avandia" to remain on the market... despite findings that it increases the risk of heart disease. the decision comes after a day of conflicting testimony about the risks of the avandia... which is used by millions who suffer from adult-onset diabetes. one f-d-a investigator said the drug should come off the market... and that there is a safer alternative. the drug actos does not show signs of causing cardiac problems. problems. dr. david graham fda drug safety reviewer "this is an unprecendented wealth of data, and all of it is consistent." consistent." the decision means-- for now-- avandia can continue to be used to treat a public health epidemic. about 21 million americans </media:text>
